Ransomeware and protecting critical national infrastructure
As most, if not all of you will have heard or even experienced by now, Friday's cyber-attack has affected more than 200,000 victims in 150 countries, according to Europol chief Rob Wainwright. He told the BBC the act was "unprecedented in its scale", and experts say another attack could be imminent and have warned people to ensure their security is up to date. "Multiple industries and services were affected, including Germany's rail network Deutsche Bahn, Spanish telecommunications operator Telefonica, US logistics giant FedEx and Russia's interior ministry." We have yet to get a full picture of the impact this attack has had on Critical National Infrastructure. However initial media reports suggested several European utilities may have been affected. The WCry ransomware will go down in history for setting an example of how malicious software can disrupt global networks, leaving systems crippled until demands are met.
We need to work together continuously to ensure we sharing information and best practice to protect critical national infrastructure. The Cyber Senate and its community of subject matter experts will be hosting the following ICS Cyber Security events in 2017 and 2018, along with several new discussions on pharma, medical and aviation to be announced shortly.
